Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Staff Material Process Engineer . This position is located in Roy, UT and supports the Sentinel program. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.
What You’ll Get To Do:
Review and approve standard and non-standard (non-metallic) materials, parts, and processes selected for use in ICBM weapon system design – Review may consist of analysis of supporting documentation (e.g. military or government adopted industry standards, manufacturer specifications (tech data sheets)), qualification and/or conformance test data, pertinent design/application information, and the overall assessment of compliance with applicable program (PM&P) requirements.

Serve as the technical lead /stakeholder for the non-metallics functional area in review board meetings – Reviews technical change requests for feasibility, risk and impact and advises in the selection, qualification, application, and procurement of all parts, materials, and processes (PM&P) for the program.

Provide technical guidance to early-mid career PM&P engineers in support of skill/knowledge development within the non-metallics team.

Manage Bill-of-Materials, new part requests, part objects, and part attributes in a Product Lifecycle Management System.

Work with design engineers in the selection and application of non-metallic materials systems (e.g. surface finishes & protective coatings, adhesives, sealants, composite materials, non-metallic mechanical parts, EEEE components and supporting hardware.)

Advise in all aspects of non-metallic materials/parts qualification; to include requirements analysis, test plan and test report review/development, and test data analysis and/or failure analysis.

Advise in the tailoring and allocation of non-metallic PM&P requirements to system, subsystem, and unit level specifications.

Conduct and/or lead efforts to develop, audit, and revise prime and subcontractor PM&P requirement specifications in accordance with requirement tailoring / updates.

Participate in and/or lead efforts to prepare change request and contract deliverable requirement list (CDRL) packages for next-level board review and approval.

Participate in and/or lead technical discussions with subcontractors, and internal / external customer(s) as needed to support the resolution of complex PMP challenges.

Support Program Subcontractors with non-metallic Part/material requirements interpretation and review of Subcontractor Data Requirements Lists (SDRLs)

Analyze internal workflow processes for improvement opportunities and to resolve workflow process challenges.

Review internal material/process/component specifications (drafts) for technical rigor and provide supporting feedback / technical guidance to specification authors.

Review and approve subcontractors' specifications and workmanship standards for compliance with program PM&P requirements.

Advise in the development of age sensitive item analyses and associated aging and surveillance test plans in support of reliability / service life program requirements.

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.
You’ll Bring These Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) discipline and 14 years of experience; 12 years with Master’s Degree; 9 years of experience with a PhD.

Must be a US Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance with an investigation date within the last 6 years.

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance.
-
Must have applicable materials and process engineering experience within military / defense industry.
-
Must have experience with selection, qualification, and/or application non-metallic parts, materials, and processes used in military applications.

Experience with the development of engineering drawings and the selection of non-metallic material systems/parts to meet program/project objectives and requirements

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PPT, etc.)
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or applicable STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) preferred

Familiarity with DoD / space / and/or missile development programs and associated parts, materials, and process requirements

Experience with configuration management and associated change control, and technical review boards
-
Familiarity with polymeric coatings, adhesives, elastomers, potting compounds, sealants, metallic finishes, composites and related application processes / procedures
-
Experience engaging with US government customers, and subcontractors
-
Familiarity with non-metallic material failure modes and associated design/use limitations.

Familiarity with accelerated aging methodology for design/service life analysis and verification.

Working knowledge of MIL-STD-11991 and application to missile programs, MIL-STD-1568 for corrosion prevention of Aerospace Weapons Systems, and MIL-STD-7179 Finishes, Coatings, and Sealants for the Protection of Aerospace Weapons Systems.

Working knowledge of Failure Analysis, physics of failure, Root Cause & Corrective Action, component specifications, component screening & qualification, component application qualification, and related installation/assembly process specifications for space applications

Experience in the review and approval of subcontractor material processing procedures.

Active DOD Top-Secret clearance
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
