Join the Team Behind Industry-Leading Utility EquipmentSherman + Reilly is seeking an experienced and driven Mechanical Engineer III to join our Engineering team in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In this role, you will help design, develop, customize, and improve specialized equipment used by utility and infrastructure customers across North America.This position offers the opportunity to work on highly engineered products in a collaborative manufacturing environment where innovation, problem solving, and hands-on engineering are valued. You'll contribute to both new product development and sustaining engineering initiatives while partnering closely with Product Management, Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.If you enjoy solving complex engineering challenges, seeing your designs move from concept to production, and working on large-scale industrial equipment, we'd love to hear from you. What You'll DoDesign and develop new products, custom equipment, and product enhancementsCreate 3D models, engineering drawings, calculations, and technical documentationPerform engineering analysis including FEA and simulation validationParticipate in prototype builds, testing, troubleshooting, and validation activitiesWork directly with manufacturing and operations teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and cost-effectiveSupport product launches and transition designs into productionConduct field visits and gather Voice of the Customer (VOC) feedback to support product developmentManage engineering project timelines, deliverables, and prioritiesProvide sustaining engineering support for existing products and continuous improvement initiativesCollaborate cross-functionally to solve technical and operational challenges
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline8+ years of engineering experience in heavy manufacturing, industrial equipment, mobile equipment, or related industriesExperience with product development and mechanical system designProven capability to design and troubleshoot complete hydraulic systems including schematics, valve logic, actuator sizing, pump selection, and overall system integrationStrong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and engineering fundamentalsExperience with CAD software and engineering analysis toolsStrong communication, organizational, and project management skillsAbility to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment Preferred QualificationsMaster's DegreeExperience with FEA and simulation softwareKnowledge of DFSS or structured product development methodologiesExperience with fabricated weldments, hydraulics, structural systems, or utility equipment Work Environment & Physical RequirementsThis role includes a combination of office-based engineering work and hands-on involvement in manufacturing and testing environments.Candidates should be comfortable:Working in manufacturing and prototype environmentsStanding for extended periodsClimbing on and off equipment during testing and troubleshootingUsing common hand tools when neededOccasionally lifting up to 50 poundsWorking outdoors during field testing activities Why Sherman + Reilly?Sherman + Reilly has been a trusted leader in utility equipment innovation for decades.
